A reason not to use GoDaddy for SEO

I have always told people just getting started with search engine marketing that GoDaddy is a great resource for registering and hosting domains. I had a friend recently have a serious problem with GoDaddy, however, when a competitor began comment spamming with his domain. I didn’t believe it at first since GoDaddy wasn’t the host (he had only registered a domain through them) but GoDaddy actually shut off his DNS and left him out to dry. It took him about a month to work everything out (after paying GoDaddy to let him move to another registrar).

This wasn’t that big of a deal for my friend (he doesn’t have a high-volume business), but I began to think about the damage that something like this could do to a serious internet retailer… especially since this happened during the holiday season. To be honest, however, this just seemed so evil of GoDaddy that I couldn’t believe it was true… I tried to convince myself that my friend had done something seriously wrong to earn their wrath.

Last night I was listening to SEO Rockstars on WebmasterRadio.fm and sure enough Web Guerrilla and Oilman talked about this exact same scenario being played out with GoDaddy. I have lost a lot of confidence in them and will most likely move all of my domains.

Notice that if you are hosting your site with GoDaddy (or any other host) then this might not be so weird - most hosts have certain Terms of Service for hosting - but a registrar should never turn off your DNS for something that is so easy for a competitor to replicate such as comment spam.
