HDMI vs. Component Cables
Working for an internet retailer of relatively obscure/niche products I don’t get too many inquiries from friends or family for most of the products that we sell. With the recent price drops on LCD and Plasma HDTV’s, however, quite a few people ask me for a recommendation on cabling. Specifically I am asked which is better - HDMI, DVI or component.
Let me make it clear first of all that HDMI and DVI cables are exactly the same with the exception of audio (HDMI carries digital audio while DVI is just video, so you still need audio cables). You can even buy adapters that will turn HDMI into DVI and vice-versa.
Between component and HDMI/DVI I have to be honest - I don’t see any difference on a 42″ screen. Component is analog and HDMI is digital, but in reality I just don’t think it matters to the end-user. If you disagree with me let me know (and there may be some implications with HDCP but that’s a separate issue).
So if you’re in the market for some HDMI cables keep in mind that while it is more convenient than alternatives that require 2 or more cables you won’t necessarily have a better picture.
