Save your battery and posterity

I often watch TV and use the internet at the same time. When I do, I usually sit on the couch with my laptop resting on my legs. After about an hour or so, the bottom of my Lenovo ThinkPad (yes, that is a joke) gets almost unbearably hot.

Now I wouldn’t be that worried about my legs feeling a little heat, but I have seen a few news stories recently talking about laptops contributing to infertility in men. There are two reasons for this - first of all, the heat a laptop radiates can cause problems. Also, when a laptop is resting on a man’s legs, the balancing act tends to put detrimental pressure on sensitive areas. Because of these concerns, I decided to source a laptop cooler for Sewell and bought one for myself to try out. So far I love it.

The Xpad Laptop Heatshield addresses both problems. The heatshield is specially designed to absorb heat from the bottom of the laptop and forms a physical barrier to these “sensitive areas.” Also, the pad is slightly larger than the profile of most laptops and allows you to sit comfortably.

A fringe benefit of the laptop heatshield is that by keeping the bottom of the laptop cool, the fan does not have to work as hard to cool down the internals and hence the battery life theoretically should be longer. I am pretty skeptical of this claim and would judge the product on its other merits.

The shield is suitable for any size laptop - simply put the pad on your lap and rest your laptop on top of it. It has anti-skid pads that enable you to hold it at a very steep angle without the laptop falling off (almost perpendicular to the ground).
