Spam Karma 2
A few weeks ago I started getting hit by comment spam - hard. I was getting about 100 PPC comments a day (the other PPC - porn, pills and casinos). I realized after a few days that I couldn’t keep approving all of my comments by hand.
So I looked around for a good comment spam filter and found Spam Karma 2. At first I wasn’t that impressed with Spam Karma 2 because it was filtering about 80% of my comment spam and approving the other 20% - I temporarily turned it off, but then after looking at some of the options I realized that I could make it more aggressive. Since setting it as a very aggressive spam filter I haven’t had one spam comment approved and I also haven’t had one legitimate comment filtered - I couldn’t be happier.
I’m not sure exactly how Spam Karma works but I think that it looks at a variety of factors such as links, common spam words, ip addresses, etc. to assign a “karma score” to each comment. It was really easy to install with Wordpress and it is probably saving me at least an hour a week.

I used the Akismet plugin that comes with the defualt installation. I just registered for a free key, and so far it’s worked perfectly.

Ditto on Akismet. It comes installed with WP v2.0. So far it’s worked great for me. In just a few weeks, it’s caught over a thousand spam comments. I’m not sure about Spam Karma, but Akismet uses the power of the community to help filter spam and reduce false positives.

Thanks for the advice, guys - so far Spam Karma has been pretty nice but if I have any problems I’m just going to upgrade to WP 2.0 and use akismet… I should probably upgrade anyway.

That;s funny I installed spam karma a few days ago on diyhappy and so far it has been perfect. I like the digest.
I noticed in WP 2.0 you can mark things as “spam” but I never knew why - or how that was different than deleting it. I guess that’s all part of the Akismet community review thing. (shrugs)

Someone else below asked this already about antispam scripts.
I am getting nailed with Spam on my website mails and in our blog website - now its offline too
much spam. Is there anyway to stop this? If not, there really isn’t any point in leaving it up
and active. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for help, Keep up the good work. Greetings from Poland

[…] If there is one thing I hate more than anything else about blogging it is dealing with comment spam. I have taken a few tips and tried out Spam Karma 2, but until consulting for a small website recently I did not realize how bad blog spam can be for the company doing it. […]

That’s kind of sad really. What filter did you say you were using? You have two spam comments in this thread alone.
