Why I love my job
I love my job more than just about anybody I know. I have identified three critical components to really enjoying your job - finding an awesome company, having an awesome job description and working with awesome people. I have quite a few friends in the job market right now so hopefully this information will be helpful as you consider your options:
An awesome company
Sewell Direct is an internet retailer of computer hardware and accessories. Our sister company, Sewell Development Corp. (which I am also involved with), is a software development company. We are small ($2M in annual revenues), but profitable.
The coolest thing about Sewell, and the reason that I think Sewell will be around for a long time, is that we are willing to adapt to changes in the environment. When I first started at Sewell, we had a software product that we knew would eventually be outdated. While we did continue to refine and develop the product, we looked for other opportunities. The fact that we were willing to constantly redefine our business plan and change our focus is the reason that we are still in business (and thriving) today.
I can only think of two reasons that otherwise sound companies go out of business: they are either unwilling to adapt or they are unable to adapt. Sewell has taught me the rewards of constantly re-evaluating our model and making changes - I have never been in an atmosphere that not only tolerates change, but where change is embraced and encouraged - this is one of the main drivers of our recent success.
If you are currently in the market for a job change I suggest that you find a company that engenders your own personal business philosophy. This is one of the reasons that Sewell is such a natural fit for me - I love working for an exciting, growth-oriented company that is comfortable with change.
An awesome job description
I was recently promoted from Marketing Director to V.P. of Business Development. I love my new job description: find new ways to increase company revenues. This would be very difficult if there were a lot of red tape keeping us from implementing new strategies, but as I mentioned earlier, we are always evolving, identifying new opportunities and implementing them. I love the fact that the job description is so broad and gives me so much freedom.
This is definitely one of the most important facets of choosing a new job - I know a lot of people who think that they would love to work for a legendary employer, such as Google, but I wonder how much they would really enjoy being a janitor or doing customer service at the internet behemoth. I’m sure that all of the fringe benefits (gourmet meals, parties, working at the Googleplex) would be really cool at first, but I would imagine that the novelty would wear off pretty quickly. Of course landing in a payscale you are comfortable with is important, but equally important is having the type of job that you really want to be doing.
Awesome people
I work with awesome people. It seems like about three years ago the stars aligned and we had a string of hires that were exactly what the company needed at the right time. We work together closely and we each have a different skill set that complements others in the company. I also think that I probably have the coolest boss in the world - the founder and CEO. He is very easy to get along with and is one of the most compassionate people I know.
I think that finding a great company and a cool job description are enough to get an employee to start working, but it is finding a company with awesome people that will keep you in a job for years. At Sewell we invest in our employees because they really are our greatest assets - I have learned that hiring the right person for a position is one of the biggest decisions an employer can make. The right employee can literally make a multi-million dollar difference from the wrong hire. One of the things that has made Sewell such a great company is the investment that we have made in ensuring that we hire the right person for the right position at the right time.

[…] Let me give you a little background: two months ago I went to the Search Engine Strategy show in San Jose and had the opportunity to meet a lot of internet retailers. This was an awesome experience - I have met quite a few marketing people and tons of technology gurus at computer shows, but this was the first time I got to meet a number of people that do exactly what I do for a living. I had the chance to give and seek advice from other internet marketers. Most people told me that as they got low on search inventory, they looked for alternative advertising opportunities. This makes sense. […]
